| The Confucius Institute is a non-profit organization for teaching Chinese language and promoting better understanding of China.It has been established for 12 years.The rapid development of the Confucius Institute has attracted the attention of people all over the world.The academic world’s discussion on the Confucius Institute is growing vigorously.By sorting out the researchs of Confucius Institutes,it is found that there are relatively few researchs on Confucius Institutes from the perspective of communication,and most of these documents are quantified around the reports of Confucius Institutes in the mainstream media.Therefore,this paper attempts to take the reports of Confucius Institutes in the newspapers belonging to United States as the research object.Through searching the lexisNexis database and EBSCO twice,169 articles from 65 newspapers were collected from the Confucius Institute.Chapter Two:The theory that this article relies on is the framework theory.This article will use quantitative content analysis and qualitative discourse analysis.Steps of quantified research include drawing samples,selecting analysis units,constructing analysis categories,and establishing reliability.The qualitative research is based on coding software to build a corpus.Chapter Three:The quantitative content analysis of Confucius Institute reports found that the number of reports has been generally risen-fluctuated-declined,and the number of reports is relevant with the increasing number of Confucius Institutes.On the theme,the most concerned theme of US newspapers is the education of Chinese language.Most reports belong to general type,and most reports from national newspapers are mostly comprehensive type.The attitude of reports are generally positive.However,national newspapers are keen on negative discussions.On the style framework,most reports adopt cooperative framework and human-friendly framework are used lessly.According to this result,the style is objective and calm.Chapter 4:From a qualitative perspective,the Confucius Institute reports are analysed by the macro-semantic structure,news schema,and generalized rhetoric.At the macro-level,the semantic structure of the Confucius Institute reports mostly uses the classic inverted-pyramid structure.The title is the theme.At the meso-level,the news schema of the Confucius Institute reports is relatively fixed,showing a modest feature.On the rhetorical level,the construction of discourse reflects the the differences of national psychology and ideology between China and the United States;the intertextuality of Confucius Institute reports has been verified from two perspectives:"vertical" orientation and "horizontal" orientation.In the end,writer analysed the conceptual metaphors in Confucius Institute reports.Chapter 5:Summarize and contrast the main conclusions of the previous quantification and qualitative research. |
