An interpreter may encounter different registers in different interpreting practice. This paper is based on the register hierarchy and parameters of register proposed by SUN Haiqin and ZHANG Ailing. They holds three levels of register and the five parameters of register are lexical properties, grammatical and syntactic equivalence, tenor consistency, formal correspondence, and verbal or phonological choices. The purpose of this paper is to identify the relations between register and student interpreter’s performance, and the relevance between register parameters and student interpreter’s performance.Consecutive interpreting(E-C)experiment was conducted. And this paper forms three hypothesis:Hypothesis 1:Register has influence on interpreter’s performance, and there arerelations between register and interpreter’s performance.Hypothesis 2:The levels of register have a positive correlation with interpreter’s total grade and each quality criteria.Hypothesis 3:Among the three levels of register, tenor consistency has the highest correlations with the interpreters’ performance. The study combines quantitative methods and qualitative methods. In the quantitative analysis, the study uses the levels of register as the independent variable, and interpreters’performance as the dependent variable to focus on whether higher register brings better performance. The study also makes the parameters of register and student interpreters’performance as variables to identify the correlations between each parameter of register and interpreters’ performance at different levels of register. In the qualitative analysis, the paper will demonstrate examples of interpreters achieving register equivalence or not and show how the parameters of register influence interpreter’s performance. With quantitative and qualitive analysis, results are as follows:Hypothesis 1 is supported.Register has influence on interpreter’s performance, and there are relations between register and interpreter’s performance.Hypothesis 2 is partially supported.Levels of register have a positive correlation with interpreters’ grade on consistency, and a negative correlation with interpreters’ grade on expression. The levels of register are neither positively nor negatively correlated with interpreters’ performance. At the middle level of register, interpreters have the lowest grade on language. At the highest level of register, interpreters have the medium grade on language. At the lowest level of register, interpreters’ grade on language is the highest.Hypothesis 3 is supported.Tenor consistency has the highest correlations with the interpreters’ performance. This paper focuses on highlighting the importance of register equivalence between the target language and the source language.Hopefully this study could provide a new perspective for the practice of student interpreters and pedagogy of interpreting.
