In recent years, many researchers have conducted a number of studies on prepositions and prepositional phrases from different perspectives. However, there has been no systematic discussion on the translation of prepositions and prepositional phrases of position in the Chinese translation of marine accident investigation reports. This thesis makes a detailed study, based on the theory of Nida’s functional equivalence and its application in translation methods and strategies,on the English-Chinese translation of prepositional phrases of position in marine accident investigation reports. It is found that the translation methods often used in marine accident investigation reports are roughly divided into the following types such as:omission, conversion, division and synthetic translation. The problems found in the process of English to Chinese translation mainly include that English prepositions are used more frequently in marine accident reports and have more abundant expressions;what’s more, prepositions in English are flexible and changeable, they are very similar in meaning and usage in Chinese translation;therefore it is very difficult to find the corresponding words in Chinese of the prepositions.Lastly, prepositions and verbs in Chinese are not very easy to distinguish,so it is difficult to use translation methods in Chinese translation. The purpose of this translation practice report is to carry out a systematic study of high-frequency prepositional phrases of position in translating marine accident investigation reports so as to provide some useful ideas for maritime English users and learners to improve their translation skills.
