| This report is concerned with the translation of the novel The Orchard keeper(1965),whose author is the popular contemporary American writer Cormac McCarthy(1933-).The first and second chapter of this novel have been chosen to carry out the translation.In this novel,Marion Sylder,an illegal wine-maker,kills a hitchhiker and buries the body in the apple orchard,finally not escaping the arrangement of fate.The language is local.This novel lays emphasis on the portrayal of characters and scenery description.It fully demonstrates the unique narrative style of McCarthy and the language features of the southern United States.The theory of translator’s subjectivity is taken as the theoretical instruction to translate this southern novel.In this translation practice,there are some translation difficulties:slang,short phrases,incomplete sentences,the dialects and fictional characterization and the presentation of Gothic style.Meanwhile,the TSUA Evaluation Model("Truth-Seeking&Utility-Attaining"Continuum Model of Evaluation)is used to ensure that the readers of translated text have similar reaction to the source text.This report includes five chapters.A brief introduction to the source text,the writer and the significance of this translation practice is involved in the first chapter.The preparation before translation,translation process and the proofreading after translation are given in the second chapter.The theoretical guidance of the translation is introduced in chapter three.Some translation difficulties and their related processing strategies during the translation process are summarized in chapter four.While the final chapter is mainly about some significant findings and suggestions in this translation practice. |
