Exploration Of The Use Of Props In Zhang Yimou’s Films

Yimou Zhang,as the most remarkable filmmaker of the fifth generation director,is also one of the most influential Chinese directors in the World.His movies are abundant in humanistic concern,applied modeling to construct visual effect and express themes.This article researches the application and narration of prop in his movies based on the film text.This article consists of four parts.The introduction summarizes Zhang Yimou’s movies and film props,stating status of movie props application in his movies and expounding research signature and creation of this article.The first part predominantly describes the various types of Props applied in Zhang Yimou’s movies,whose applications are divided into two types:furnishings and drama usage.The props of Furnishings are applied to environment construction,age expression and characterization,whereas to the drama usage props possess metaphor,facilitating emotion expression,Structure of the plot and theme sublimation.The second part illustrates and researches the props application in Zhang Yimou’s movies based on the film text with examples.Amazing visual expression,ritual presentation and Intuitionistic style are the three features.For amazing visual expression,it consists of combination of props and colors and the hypersensitivity expression of props.Ritual presentations,show the function of props from the presentation of etiquette and the construction of characters’ emotions.The visualized style manifests itself from two aspects:film style and director style.The third chapter mainly explores the narrative function of props.The basic purpose of design prop is to narrate.Zhang Yimou’s film props involved in the film narrative.The props in his films have the function of composing the film,strengthening or metaphorical themes,conveying culture and causing cultural thinking.This chapter explores the narrative function of Zhang Yimou’s film props,aims to excavate the deeper meaning and general creation rules of Zhang Yimou’s works in order to get some enlightenment from them.In this paper,through the study of Zhang Yimou’s film props,the author explores the style of Zhang Yimou’s film creation and the deeper significance of his film,aims to enrich the use of props in Chinese films and to provide reference for the later research and creation.
