On The Spatial Narration Of Bai Xianyong’s Short Stories

There is no doubt that Bai Xianyong who is one of the first contemporary novelists introduced to the mainland in Tai Wan is a prodigy among the contemporary novelists.His short stories have attracted much attention by critics with his unique subjects,themes of great changes in the country,and his narrative techniques of moving freely between tradition and modernity.Now the study on comparative system of Bai Xianyong’s novel mainly focused on its themes,tragic consciousness,general narrative skills and language characteristics and the like,while there is not enough attention given to the corresponding research of space narrative and the theoretical system has not yet formed.Based on the space narrative of Bai Xianyong’s novel,this thesis will dive deep into the space image of Bai Xianyong’s novel,its construction of space form and his personal experiences and spacial representation in order to explore the special significance of space narrative on expressing themes and shaping characters,which can show the unique artistic characteristics and ideological value of his novel writing.This paper is divided into the following three parts:The first chapter focuses on the study of space image of Bai xianyong’s short novels.Imagery is widely used by Bai Xianyong who is a writer with traditional consciousness,which is also an important feature of his novel writing and creates many possibilities for his novel creation.Among them,three typical images including the "living room" space image,"garden" space image,"city" space image appear frequently in his short novels,which is full of ideological connotation.This chapter emphasizes the text representation and narrative function of these three space images.Chapter two focuses on the study of the construction of space form in Bai Xianyong’s short novels.The spatial narrative of his novel is particularly embodied in the construction of space form.He deals with the time and space of the novel through juxtaposition narrative.Besides,he breaks the linear time stream and constructs different space form such as circle,cassette,orange peel and so on,which can present the feature of spatialization and produce unexpected artistic effect.The third chapter expounds and elaborates Bai Xianyong’s personal experiences and spacial representation.On the path of growth,the childhood experience gave him heavy content,the war made him feel the fragility of life,the smallness and lowliness in the face of reality,the disease made him experience pain and sadness,his mother’s death let him think about the fate and studying in the USA produced a strong sense of identity among native speakers.These extraordinary life experiences let him have a special perspective of the world,which is an important source of the creation of space representation in Bai’s novels.
