English reading proficiency is undoubtedly very important for students in vocational schools and is very helpful in their future career and study. In the modern world, new science and technology springs up and worldwide scientific exchange becomes more frequent;students should have English reading proficiency to gather necessary information in their future work. However,in vocational schools, students’ English reading proficiency is far from satisfying. After a lot of research and investigation,it shows that in most vocational schools,English teaching still focus on traditional "three-step method" which results in sudents’poorabilities and lack of interest in English reading. The present situation of English reading teaching can not meet the demand of modern society and calls for a transformation of teaching method.Project-based learning(PBL)is widely practiced in many countries as an effective way in schools and colleges. It focuses on resolution of practical problems and puts much emphasis on students’ self-exploration,group discussion and cooperation. Many previous related researches show that the contribution of project-based learning to learners’ self-development and their competences in many subjects has been widely acknowledged. Its advantage is especially perceived in vocational education. In this study, the author is to carry out application of PBL in English reading teaching in the vocational school to explore whether project-based learning can improve students’ English reading performance in vocational schools, and whether project-based learning has positive effect on students’ English reading motivation. The research chose two intact classes in the same grade in Hanzhong Vocational School randomly as the subjects of the experiment,in which one is the control group(CG)and the other is the experimental group(EG).In the experiment, the author applied PBL in EG and the traditional lecture method in C.Test and questionnaire were adopted in in the experiment to check the effect of PBL on students’ reading performance and English reading motivation. After an analysis of the results by SPSS 20.0,it showed that compared with the result of CG students in EG made much more improvement after the experiment and the effect of PBL on students’ English reading motivation is clearly positive. It can be concluded that PBL is more effective in improving students’English reading performance than traditional lecture method, and it is helpful in stimulating students’ English reading motivation in vocational schools. At the end of the thesis, the author pointed out some deficiency of this research due to the limited research time and research subject and also the limitation of the author.
