Conversational Implicature Theory(CIT)was first proposed by Grice in the1970 s.From then on,it was widely applied in various fields of language teaching and research.Moreover,listening played a more important role in language teaching for art major.In recent years,plenty of researchers at home and abroad have made achievements in combining CIT with English listening and speaking teaching.However,researches have focused on empirical research of listening teaching with the guidance of CIT instead of speaking.Action research was based on a spiral and cycled process,including focusing on teaching problems,proposing research plan,conducting research plan as well as evaluating research results.What's more,action research was aiming at dealing with the practical teaching problems for teachers.Longman English Interactive(LEI)is a comprehensive tutorial by video teaching.The tutorial explains and practices in listening,speaking,grammar,vocabulary,pronunciation,reading and other aspects.Based on the needs of teaching and examinations as well as improving art major students' listening and speaking competences,this thesis mainly focuses on an action research on college English listening teaching for art majors from the perspective of Conversational Implicature Theory in order to help students get better listening scores in Practical English Test for Colleges(PRETCO).Action research that is based on CIT uses combination of qualitative and quantitative methods so as to answer the following three questions:(1)What are the problems in college English listening and speaking teaching for art majors?(2)How is the effect of Conversation Implicature Theory in college English listening and speaking teaching for art majors?(3)What are the feedbacks from the teacher andof Conversation Implicature Theory?The 39 participants in this action research are freshmen of art major from one class in SYNU.This experiment lasts a whole term about 15 weeks.In addition,the research results are analyzed by tests,questionnaire,interviews as well as teaching and learning logs.The research results show that:(1)Art major students have difficulty in distinguishing English vocabularies and pronunciations,and they cannot understand the indirect utterances which come from the speakers;They cannot express their opinions fluently and accurately;(2)Conversational Implicature Theory is beneficial to improve students' listening and speaking competences and increase their interests in learning English;Students' performances in conversations are much better than that of dialogues in listening performances;(3)The teacher and students have thoughtful analysis and express their honest opinions about the college English listening and speaking teaching under the guidance of Conversational Implicature Theory.What's more,they also provide some suggestions for the future listening and speaking teaching.
