The Research On The Relationship Between Maeterlinck And May Fourth Movement Writers

The thesis is divided into three chapters except the preface and conclusion:The foreword introduces the historical background of May Fourth Movement writer’s studying the western literature,and three stages of Maeterlinck’s literary works.I will state the specific performance about the upsurge of Maeterlinck’s works,tease out the classical evaluation of May Fourth Movement writers on Maeterlinck’s works in chronological order.There are three main reasons for the upsurge of Maeterlinck’s works:firstly,the demand of the times,modern Chinese corruption of politics,the recession of economy,the backwardness of cultural thought,China urgently need to establish new literature.Secondly,the writer’s demand,the background of studying abroad of May Fourth Movement writers and the position of the prophet who is formed by the traditional concept of "the Saints and External Kings".Thirdly,the charm of Maeterlinck’s works——narrative strategy and aesthetic value.The first chapter is thinking about the mysterious writing of Maeterlinck and Tian Han’s literary works.Tian Han who got lots of ideas from Maeterlinck’s works.Tian Han learned some of the mysterious writing of Maeterlinck.This focus on the creation of mysterious images and the expression of mysterious forces in the theme of creation.The second chapter discusses the symbolism of Maeterlinck and Mao Dun.Mao Dun’s attention to Maeterlinck is long and deep.He actively translated the related works of Maeterlinck and indirectly promoted the preliminary development of symbolism in modern China.Mao Dun is more likely to explore the more possibilities of symbolism by studying Maeterlinck to create a new era of literature that can lead to social curative effect,and make up the lack of realism and naturalism.The third chapter analyzes Maeterlinck and May Fourth Movement new romantic writers.Take Guo Moruo’s "Dawn" and Tao Jingsun’s "Man in Black" as example to search for clues between the new romantic writers and the creation of Maeterlinck.The conclusion sums up the historical values of the research on the relationship between Maeterlinck and May Fourth Movement writers.The study of Maeterlinck and May Fourth Movement writers can enrich the relevant information of the chinization of symbolism and supplement the study of the author’s creation.As the literary technique,the symbolism of Maeterlinck not only provide a new way of thinking for the old literature,but also a way of thinking and spirit,which echoes with the May Fourth Movement era.
