In the year 1980,Lakoff and Johnson put forward the revolutionary theory of conceptual metaphor in their epoch-making works Metaphors We Live By.From then on,the study of metaphors entered a new period and was brought into the the scope of cognitive linguistics.In the Name of People,as a famous and popular Chinese TV series,is full of conceptual metaphors.This study analyzes the conceptual metaphor in the famous Chinese TV series,In the Name of People within the frame of the Lakoff and Johnson's Conceptual Metaphor Theory.The purpose of the research is to answer the following three questions: 1).What are the types of the conceptual metaphors that appear in In the Name of People based on Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory? 2).What is the distribution of the conceptual metaphors in In the Name of People? 3).What is the working mechanism of those conceptual metaphors? From conceptual metaphor's perspective,the thesis employs the combination of qualitative approach and quantitative approach as the research methodology.This thesis conducts a study of the conceptual metaphors in the random 10 episodes of 52 In the Name of People.Based on the Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory,it is found that there are eleven conceptual metaphors in In the Name of People,seventy examples,which are all divided into three types of conceptual metaphors,namely,structural metaphor,orientational metaphor and ontological metaphor.There are also three subtypes of ontological metaphor: entity and substance metaphor,container metaphor and personification.This study also analyzes the working mechanism behind those conceptual metaphors.The result of this paper may provide some help in further understanding of In the Name of People as well as Chinese culture.It can provide certain theoretical and practical guidance for the study of conceptual metaphors in In the Name of People and other television works.Meanwhile,it may help people to make a better use of language skills in daily communication.
