St.Augustine’s had numerous writings and achievements in his lifetime that he was called a banner of Christian Godfather theology in the Middle Ages.Throughout his life he devoted himself to integrating the ancient Greek,Hebrew Jewish culture and Christian doctrine, and gave birth to a rich and inclusive Christian theology and philosophical system. As a result,he was regarded as the pioneer and master of the godfather philosophy with a complete theoretical system. He devoted all his soul and heart to upholding the aesthetic doctrine of God and answering questions of "evil" to people/the world. She thus proposed a system of philosophy, including "the City of God","Trinitate" Libertarianism "," the original sin ",and “the theory of the grace of God ".Based on the belief in Christian theology, the theodicy has extended and deepened many issues of aesthetics and art.It is precisely because of the special relationship between his aesthetic thoughts and his positive thoughts that his aesthetics has a certain degree of typicality and particularity. Therefore, the excavation and analysis of the aesthetics and his artistic ideas on the development of theodicy in Augustine can be regarded as the starting point and the necessary road leading to medieval aesthetics. This thesis attempts to analyze the theoretical thought of aesthetics from Augustine’s theodicy and break through the original barriers to connect theology with aesthetics. This theoretical thought is synchronized with the development of theodicy,in the following order: from the proposal of evil → Libertarianism → the theory of the grace of God and the original sin. These processes coincided with the development of his theodicy: thinking on the issue of beauty → the establishment of the concept of art → reflections on the aesthetic significance. This thesis analyzes the relationship between Augustine theology and aesthetics from a new perspective. The first chapter analyzes the origin of Augustine’s theodicy theory from two aspects: his inheritance of the philosophical thought and his life experiences under the cultural background. The second chapter focuses on exploring the aesthetics of germination in Augustine’s theodicy theory after discussing the internal relations between religious experience and aesthetic experience: the discussion from the question of evil to the beauty;the analysis of Augustine’s concept of art from the Libertarianism;and the understanding of aesthetic significance starting from " the original sin" and " the theory of the grace of God".The third chapter compares and analyzes the aesthetic thoughts of theodicy of Augustine with the aesthetic ideas of other representative theologians in the Middle Ages, and establishes the typicality and uniqueness of his aesthetic ideas. The fourth chapter discusses the influence of Augustine aesthetics on modern aesthetics and the enlightenment to contemporary aesthetics. It connects medieval aesthetics with modern aesthetics. It provides a space for deep reflection on the mediocrity and vulgarity of contemporary art.And it raises more and more attention to medieval and Christian aesthetics,as well as more consideration of human existence, literary arts and aesthetics.
