The House of Mirth,The Custom of the Country,and The Age of Innocence were Edith Wharton's Old New York novels,across the Edith Wharton's different creation period,focusing on the Old New Yorker's survival state of awakening and struggle Under the background of the great changes in American society,concentrated expression of Edith Wharton's Old New York complex and Paris complex,showed the conflict between old culture and new culture.This paper tries to analyze and study Old New York novels under the influence of the strong emotion(complex)of Edith Wharton from the perspective of psychology and culture,and explore the source of Edith Wharton's creation.The introduction part explains the key words “complex” and “Old New York novels”.The main body is divided into three chapters.The first chapter focuses on the complex of Edith Wharton: Wharton has Old New York complex in her heart,so the Old New York story would pour out of her pen.The expectation of adventure,the expectation of change of life,the expectation of freedom,and these expectations gathered together into Wharton's Paris complex.Old New York complex and Paris complex was in constant conflict and fusion,comparative analysis,not only helps to understand the author's personal struggle and psychological contradictions,but also deeply understand American culture in the oscillation of the traditional and modern basic movements.The second chapter focuses on the expression of Edith Wharton's complex in “Old New York novels”.Take Lily Bart as an example,showing the way Edith Wharton examines Old New York culture from the perspective of the Paris complex,examining the way that she created a spiritual kingdom against material wealth.Take Undine Spragg as an example,narrating Undine as a ruthless invader overturns the Old New York society's tradition.She does not hesitate to sacrifice everything for her own desire,revealing the thinking of Wharton on conspicuous consumption culture and the modern civilization full of desire.Take Ellen Olenska and Newland Archer as an example,revealing unique modernity and realistic humanistic care in the novels of Edith Wharton.The third chapter deeply analyzes the artistic characteristics and acceptance of Edith Wharton's Complex on Writing.Old New York novels were Edith Wharton's writing of strong personal emotional entanglements,with real beauty,exquisite beauty and tragic beauty,nostalgic beauty four features: Old New York novels are easily inspired by readers due to their true feelings;As an emotional writing under Wharton's exquisite consciousness,the Old New York novels show exquisite beauty everywhere.The themes of Old New York novels were not mournful,reflecting unique tragic style.Old New York novels,as a collective nostalgic affection,are novels that combine elegance and popularity,sentimentalism,and realism.The popularity of Old New York novels reflects the needs and tastes of the mass market.Finally,in the conclusion part,the Old New York complex is the source of literary creation of Edith Wharton;Paris Complex is her spiritual power to pursue freedom in perseverance.The House of Mirth,The Custom of the Country,and The Age of Innocence were Edith Wharton's Old New York complex and Paris complex on Writing.
