Research On The Structure Of "Bu+Adjective"

The topic of this research is about ‘Bu+Adjective’.It started from language facts,based on the investigation and analyzed on a large amount of corpus.It conducted a research about semantic types,symmetries and expressive functions of ‘Bu+Adjective’ structure.It also revealed why this structure could be used in a high frequency.Besides the introduction and conclusion,the main body of the paper consists of four chapters.Chapter 1 mainly analyzes the general characteristics of adjective and members of which can’t be negated by ‘Bu’.An adjective is a kind of content word which represents the nature and state of a person or thing.And this kind of nature or state has different degrees of certainty.In general,the more fixed the meaning of an adjective represents,the more difficult it is to be directly negated by ‘Bu’.Besides,adjectives which contain the morpheme which can’t be compatible with ‘Bu’ are also can’t be negated by ‘Bu’.Chapter 2 summarized the semantic types of ‘Bu+Adjective’ structure.On the basis of corpus analyzing,we first divide the semantic types into conventional negation and special negation according to whether adjectives have a shift on meaning category after they negated by ‘Bu’.And then,we divide the conventional negation into seven small types according to the difference of specific context.They include median negation,contrary negation,degree negation,nature negation,subjective negation,dynamic negation and the function which is equivalent to a noun negation.We divide the special negation into fixed collocation and temporary use.Chapter 3 focused on symmetry and asymmetry between adjectives which have antisense relationship after they negated by ‘Bu’.‘Bu+Adjective’ often has different understandings in different contexts,even though the same adjective.It presents a characteristic of symmetry and asymmetry which are interlaced.At the end of this chapter,we also pay attention to those adjectives which don’t have antonyms.We discussed the relationship between its negation form and affirmation form.Chapter 4 analyzed the expressive functions and use motivations of ‘Bu+Adjective’ from the perspective of using.The structure ‘Bu+Adjective’ mainly has three expressive functions.They are refutation function,euphemism evaluation function and referential function.The motivations of using this structure are mainly from two aspects.They are subjective choice and objective constraint.This structure’s implicit functions in rhythm and syntactic aspects promoted its high frequency use objectively.
