This practice report is about the E-C translation of the book Empire: How Britain Made the Modern World.The original context of this report belongs to non-literary discourse.Furthermore,Niall Ferguson has given not only comprehensive analysis and discussion of Britain in Modern times in the field of politics,economies,cultures and history,but also a special opinion on the matter of Empire Britain.So it embraces enormous historical meaning and translation values.There are five parts in this practice report.The first part is introduction of the report.The second part is introduction of the process of this report.The third part is analyses on translation action.The fourth part is case analyses.During this process,the author uses the Theory of Translation Equivalence,which put forwarded by Catford,as theory guidance,comprehensively analyzed translation strategies and methods that used in this process so as to fulfill or come near the aim of translation equivalence.From the aspect of chapters,sentences and words,the author has concluded translation strategies and methods on annotation,verse,and some special words such as geographical and historical noun and analyzed feasibility and translation effect of the utilization of translation equivalence on non-literary discourse.The last part is study analyses and conclusion.In this part,pros and cons of this practice report have discussed and also,it brings some actual influence and referential values for translation of non-literary discourse.Under the guidance of Theory of Translation Equivalence,the translator tried every effort in sticking to the principle of equivalence during English-Chinese translation.When translating geographical nouns and historical nouns,the method of transliteration and free translation have been used.During book-name translation,not only common rules but also The Theory of Translation Equivalence have been used to improve the creativity and differentiation of book-name translation.Those translation methods that mentioned aforesaid provide new thought and strategies for translation of relevant proper nouns.In addition,according to verse translation,the strategy of transliteration,free translation,alliteration,end rhyme have been used.When translating annotation,the translator has put much emphasis on expressing the original context succinctly and accurately.The translation of quotes by famous people not only absorbed the principle of concision and accuracy,but also absorbed The Theory of Translation Equivalence so as to improve translation level.Those sentence translation that mentioned above,have offered improvement and complement in principlesand strategies of non-literal context translation,and furthermore provided new translation thought and methods for other translators.In context translation part,the translator has put much emphasis on the influence of ideology of modern times towards the original context.Such a method,researching translation strategy from the perspective of ideology,is worthy to be deeply researched and discussed.
