Around the 20 th century was the prosperous period in which Chinese and Western cultural exchanges converged.Oil painting,as an important part of Western culture, was vigorously disseminated and developed in China.During the Republican period, with the rise of art education for women, the upsurge of overseas study has prompted groups of women to go abroad for further study on oil painting successively.Europe and Japan became the two major cradles of Chinese oil painting education at that time. And because of the fusion of Chinese and western art trend which was started by both home and abroad, female artists generally showed those artistic features in their creations of oil painting.Taking these three Republican period female artists —— Fang Junbi,Pan Yuliang and Guan Zilan as examples, this paper will analyze and discuss their creations which are based on the usage of western oil painting materials.Under the fusion of Chinese elements with the selection of creative subject matters and the use of formal language, this paper aims to bring out how the artistic features were characterized in oil painting.Maybe they capture the image of Chinese cultural symbols,or use the lines to express feelings,or adopt the complanation and the composition of space, etc. In this way,we will have deep insights into the artistic features of the integration of the East and the West that the feminine oil paintings have showed during the Republican period, finding the evidence that female artists were involved in the reform of Chinese modern art, exploring their irreplaceable contribution of promoting the development of Chinese art history and confirm that they plays a critical role which cannot be ignored in Chinese modern art history.
