Scaffolding instruction,as one of the essential teaching models based on the constructivism theory,has gradually become the significant part in the foreign language class.It emphasizes the students’ subjectivity in learning and the proper scaffolding to guide them to understand and apply new knowledge.In this way,it contributes to improving students’ learning competence and help them to have a better performance in learning tasks.The appearance of this teaching model can not only enrich the field of English teaching and research,but it is of great significance to improve the quality of high school English teaching.Reading and writing play an important role in junior high school English teaching.However,with the single teaching form and model,there is still a phenomenon that some of the teachers pay more attention to reading than writing.Hence,it’s the key point that teacher need to consider that how to improve students’ interest in writing and the ability to apply writing strategies.The research is based on the constructivism theory and the theory of zone of proximal development,which is also combined with the characteristics and steps of scaffolding instruction.It attempts to explore the effects of the application of scaffolding instruction to reading and writing teaching in junior middle school.In the research process,it mainly employs the questionnaires,tests and interview to collect and analyse the data with the assistance of the SPSS software.In addition,the teaching design is on the basis of the theories concerned and the connection between teaching content and method in English reading and writing.The research shows that: 1)the application of the scaffolding instruction to the combination of reading and writing helps to change students’ negative attitudes towards English writing.Teachers should fully consider how to improve students’ interest in learning and self-confidence in the process of teaching design;2)Students have improvement in English writing,especially in the aspect of writing content and the structure.Consequently,it’s certainly worth guiding students to summarize thecontent and write the outline before writing;3)to some extent,it improves the students’ awareness to use writing strategies,and teachers are able to guide students to apply writing strategies more often,which aids in improving students’ writing competence.
