| Self-repair,the common phenomenon in discourse communication,is a self-produced behavior when speakers repair their mistakes in discourse without others’ help.Consecutive Interpreting(CI)is a bilingual behavior.Studying self-repair in CI has far-reaching effects and is conducive to interpreting learners.By now,since few researches were conducted on the phenomenon of self-repair in interpreting,how to reduce self-repairs tends to be an area of confusion for interpreting learners in their study.This thesis will study the phenomenon of self-repair in interpreting from English to Chinese,using the materials of the Sixth Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest,Hunan,along with other data from similar experiments,as well as my own daily study and practices.Impromptu competition video and experiments were adopted for this present study.This thesis concludes with the following findings:first,contestants’ self-repair falls into three main categories,namely different information self-repair,appropriateness self-repair and error self-repair,which is primarily on the different information self-repair.Second,most of the part material is from the Sixth Cross-Strait Interpreting Contest,Hunan,so contestants’ performance is directly related to their marks.This thesis makes a comparison between their marks and frequency of self-repair,the author found that the two variables doesn’t present a direct linkage.Third,the reasons why contestants conduct self-repair includes that self-monitoring system plays roles,whether the desire of conducting self-repair is strong or not and whether contestants command Chinese language or not,which is adhering the research finding of former scholars,and the fourth and final stage is to improve contestants’ speech fluency and achieve higher marks in competitions.Thus,this thesis provides some corresponding methods of reducing the phenomenon of self-repair in interpreting,i.e.practicing more gist interpreting and sight interpreting,noting down time adverbial at an eye-catching position and improving Chinese capacity with the hope that such techniques will be conducive in interpreting training and pedagogy. |
