Philosophically, madness is a lack of langugage. The autobiography of madness is paradoxical in the sense the encounter between "speaking about madness" and the"madness that speaks" has never been totalized. But literature writers never give up trying.Edgar Allan Poe is among one of the writers who deal with the paradox in autobiography of madness in fictional works. In his short story "The Tale-Tell Heart,"which probes into the depth of madness, the distance between language and madness is shorten to the utmost extent. The short story echoes various theories of madness, which prevents readers to taking any of them as fictional truth in the game of make-believe and thus imposes a sense that the essence of madness is absent on readers. It is a two-side narrative which consists a speech by the heart of madness and a speech by the heart of reason. On one hand, the real-world-based murder story is unreadable in the domain of natural narratology. It symbolizes the meaningless beating of the heart of madness. On the other hand, metaphorical story could be constructed by adopting unnatural models. It is a story told by the heart of reason in which the heart of reason and the heart of madness take turns to kill each other. If the heart of madness were to utter meaningful sounds,he would tell exactly the same story. The short story converges the speaking subject and the speaking of madness by letting two impersonal voices, the heart of madness and the heart of reason, speak simultaneously. In this way,the concept of madness is substantialized and becomes a narrator.
