| Complex sentences,the typical attribute of legal English,cause great difficulties in translation but attract intense attention from scholars both at home and abroad.Scholars have studied them from various perspectives,for example,syntactic level.However,complex sentences are seldom explored by grammatical analysis.The translation of legal English material is quite important for Chinese statutory construction.Standing at a new starting point,China urgently needs to perfect its legal system to meet the demands of the new era.Thus,figuring out useful and constructive translation techniques has always been the pursuit of many translators.Constitutional Law of Westlaw Nutshell is the text book of law schools in USA,manifesting the constitutional spirit by varieties of leading cases.Chapter two of Constitutional Law of Westlaw Nutshell Series is selected as translation material to study the complex sentence translation.In this book so many complex sentences are used,which creates a good study material for translators to hone translation skills and learn more about the characteristics of legal English.Given the linguistic features of the source text,this translation report is designed to delve into the categories and characteristics of complex sentences in legal English,and at the same time tries to put forward useful translation skills of complex sentences in English legal works,based on the grammatical analysis,especially kernel sentences,proposed by Nida.The translation concept of kernel sentences is quite instructive in analyzing sentence structures,which means that translators recast expressions of original texts in the most ambiguous and clearest way and helps translators easily decompose sentence structures.Through this translation practice,the author of this translation report could sharpen relevant translation skills,gain a better understanding of complex sentences translation of legal English and meanwhile hope to offer some references for translators in translating legal English. |
