A Study On The Translation Of Network Martial Arts Novels From The Perspective Of Reception Aesthetics

Since the founding of new China,China has made great efforts in foreign cultural exchanges and a series of projects have been brought up to promote the “Chinese literature going-global” program,such as the “Chinese Literature” project started in 1951,the “Panda Books” project in 1981,and the “Library of Chinese Classics” project in 1995.However,the first two projects ceased publication in 2000 and the situation of the rest one is also worrisome.Under the circumstance that the “Chinese literature going-global” program has suffered so many setbacks,the translation of network martial arts novels at Wuxiaworld is warmly welcomed by readers abroad and becomes an important force in the spreading of Chinese culture.The external communication of network martial arts novels is a special translation phenomenon existing in the historical background of the Internet era.The study on this phenomenon not only injects fresh blood into translation studies but also provides some references for the “Chinese literature going-global” program,which has both the theoretical and practical significance.This thesis attempts to study on the translation of network martial arts novels at Wuxiaworld from the perspective of Reception Aesthetics and in return expands the research scope of Reception Aesthetics.In the text analysis,based the case study of Wuxiaworld’s representative work—Coiling Dragon,the notions of “readers’ active role”,“horizon of expectation”,and “fusion of horizons” are used to discuss the reader’s participation and the translator’s subjectivity which make the translation of network martial arts novels a big success.To make a further explanation,the concept of “readers’ active role” is applied to discuss the reader’s participation in the comment,patronage,and interpretation of the target text;the concepts of “horizon of expectation” and “fusion of horizons” are applied to discuss the translator’s subjectivity at the linguistic level,cultural level,and paratextual level.Finally,it comes to a conclusion that the reason of the successful translation of network martial arts novels is that the translator adopts the strategy of domestication at the linguistic level and foreignization at the cultural level,based on which the translator also fuses the horizons of the parties in the translation activity.Meanwhile,some references are provided for the “Chinese literature going-global” program in this thesis.
