In modern Chinese,the directional word "Shang(上)"is used frequently in daily life.While it is also a word that Thai students are likely to use incorrectly,study about Chinese and Thai use of it is rare.Since the usage and semantics of "Shang(上)"are being continuously developed,and given the differences between Chinese and Thai languages,the problem Thai students have acquiring correct use of the Chinese directional word "Shang(上)" is obvious.This paper thus uses data from a questionnaire survey(N=)to explore differences in its meaning and usage between Chinese and Thai speakers.The paper also provides specific teaching suggestions based on study findings.The study conducts a comparative analysis of the conceptual meaning of Chinese and Thai’s "Shang(上)"as a directional word,and based on data from corpus and questionnaire survey of Jinan University,we found that there are six types of errors in the process of learning and using "Shang(上)" by Thai students.Then we analyzed its causes and put forward the teaching strategy of Chinese directional word "Shang(上)" for Thai students.This paper is combined of 5 chapters.Firstly,the introduction includes reasons for this research,its contents,its meaning,research methods and sources of corpus.Moreover,there is a definition of directional word "Shang(上)" in both Chinese and Thai,also a review of the research production about the acquisition of Chinese directional word "Shang(上)" Secondly,a comparison of directional word "Shang(上)" between Chinese and Thai including comparative analysis on grammatical features and different usage of Chinese and Thai directional word "Shang(上)".In this part,we specifically compare the cognitive semantic differences between "Shang(上)" of Chinese and corresponding words in Thai language which are "(?)"、"(?)"."(?)".Thirdly,the summarization and analysis on the situation of Thai students’ acquisition of directional word "Shang(上)" According to the errors that appeared on data from corpus and questionnaire survey of Jinan University,the structure collocation,context of sentence,semantic expression and frequency of the usage,we carried out the analysis and explanation.Fourthly,through statistical analysis,observed causes of the errors of Thai students’ acquisition on directional word "Shang(上)".Finally,the teaching strategy suggestions.We believed that the three stages of Chinese language students:beginner,intermediate and advanced level should be differentiated teaching,combined with object teaching method,comparison method,graphic method and specialized directional word "Shang(上)" frame structure teaching.
