English learning plays an important role in our education in China.In primary and middle school,English teaching and learning focus on pronunciation,lexicon,and grammar.However,in college period,English proficiency is required for students.The lexical size can determine learners' second language fluency to a great extent,so the large accumulation of English lexicon is essential to make the significant progress of college students' English proficiency.However,the ubiquitous phenomenon of polysemy in the English language makes lexical acquisition difficult and complicated.A research has found that in the polysemous lexical acquisition the cognitive style of polysemy,polysemous representation in the mental lexicon and the lexical applications are related to each other and mutually promote each other.But the experimental results have indicated that the polysemous representation in the mental lexicon is too separate and unrelated with each other for Chinese English learners,which brings the burdens in cognition.As a result,it is very essential to construct the comprehensive polysemous lexical acquisition model for Chinese English learners so as to improve their lexical acquisition efficiency.This research tries to construct such a polysemous lexical acquisition model where it analyzes and complements the cognitive style of polysemy,priming synonyms of target polysemes which can be interchangeably substituted in the same context,together contributing to the polysemous lexical application.In the proposed model,it interprets the meaning relatedness and the representation structure of polysemy in essence from the perspective the Prototype-based Radial Set Model,and the new sense enumeration model is proposed to indicates polysemous lexicon and their primed synonyms based on the Sense Enumeration Model,that is,different representations of polysemous meanings are enumerated by means of synonyms with same meanings relative to certain contexts where they can be interchangeably substituted.Thus by virtue of the stored lexical knowledge in the mind together with the comparison of synonymous substitution,the polysemous lexical application has been realized.Given the difference of individual mental lexicon,the prescriptive L2 mental lexicon is introduced with the size of about 3,500 words for newly enrolled college students according to the College English Teaching Syllabus.Therefore,the polysemous acquisition model is prescriptive and proposed as the Prototype-based Sense Enumeration Model.In order to verify the model,this research has conducted the relevant lexical experiment.At first,the polysemes entry including selected polysemes by sampling based on the model and relevant judgement criteria are designed to facilitate subjects to understand and use the model;secondly a total of 102 sophomores from two universities are invited to participate in this experiment,including the pre-test where subjects are required to acquire target polysemous words by means of current methods,and the post-test where subjects do by means of the designed lexical entry based on the proposed model.Then results of 88 valid answer sheets respectively in the pre-test and the post-test are input into the computer,and the Statistical Product and Service Solutions and Microsoft Excel are used to analyze the data.Through the paired sample T test and the independent samples T test,it can be concluded that the mean difference between the average score of the pre-test and the post-test of.000 much lower than.05 is significant,which infers that at least 95%of subjects in the post-test have gained higher scores than that in the pre-test,proving the validity of the model.However,there are also many limitations in this research.For example,it only emphasizes the similarity between polysemes and their synonyms,ignoring their meaning differences and other problems,which may bring new perspectives for future studies of polysemes acquisition.
