García Márquez’s novels created a series of rich and varied "images of death" by using full of philosophical and poetic brush strokes, and sketched the world of Macondo,a world full of magic and mistery.Based on the Latin American History and reality,he analyzed the origins and deaths of the collective life and even primitive life through the display of the death of the town of Macondo, the Buendía family and its members. He pictures the loneliness mental state, the most primitive and profound emotions of human dialogue.Through the horror or indifference of the characters towards death or the profound description of the loneliness and nothingness of life,we can have an overview of both death and loneliness experience of all mankind, and from there we can study as well the living conditions of mankind around nature and the universe. After experiencing innumerable wars, violence, colonial encroachment, suffering and death,Latin Americans continue to lead their lives in thinking that love and solidarity are the way out for loneliness and death.Nothing new to the collective experience of mankind which throughout history has struggled to survive and move from the source of life to death.Since ancient times, human beings have survived through love and solidarity.Beyond death remains the unknown. This thesis is divided into three parts. In the introduction,I make a general picture of García Márquez the man and his works, research status and significance to this thesis’ aims. Then I continue with the construction of the body of the thesis which consists of three chapters: in the first chapter, taken the death images in Márquez’s novels as a reference,I make an analysis of Death, which is directly expressed in the novel’s characters and has countless deep aesthetic effects in the author’s "black humor" writing style. This analysis proceeds with the "non-existence" and "existence" paradox, explained through the "living dead" characters of his novels,in an attempt to show the spiritual world of loneliness and emptiness, but not only.It is as well an attempt to explore the causes of Márquez’ philosophy on Life and Death, how the writer’s unique life experience and the History and Culture of Latin America with its collective consciousness of death become a prototype that will enhance the writer’s writing style. In the Third chapter,I analyze far beyond Death and its rational choice,as well as how unity and love work against the torrent of loneliness which generally triggers a desperate conclusion: Death. The present thesis concludes finally with a summary of Márquez’ death images in various forms of writing style.
