A Translation Report On "Patent For Invention-Numerical Control Automatic Lathe"

With China’s continuous improvement in economy and its strengthening in science and technology,a large number of creations and inventions have come into existence,which leads to a rapid growth of patent documentations.In recent years,great attentions have been paid to the construction of patents in Japan since its successful transformation from the establishment of the country in science and technology into that in intellectual property rights.The translation of patent documentations is the only way to get the authorization information of China’s State Intellectual Property Office directly and accurately,As a result,the Chinese-Japanese translation of the patent documentations are becoming more and more important.A patent document entitled the Numerical Control Automatic Lathe is used in this translation report,of which the text types of different components like the description items,abstract,claim of rights,specifications and etc.have been classified and analyzed by means of Peter Newmark’s text translation theory.The different parts of a patent belong to different classifications because of the functional differences.The description items can be classified into the information category,which is the expressive text,and semantic translation method is adopted to reproduce the source text accurately in the translation.The abstract,which is a general overview of the specification or a summary of the invention,can be classified into the category of informative texts because it has a function of information.By means of foreignization strategy,literal translation is applied to fully convey the actual information.Claim of rights can be classified into expressive text type according to its function,and foreignization strategy is adopted in its translation.The specifications are the body part in patent documents,which belong to expressive text type,but with some characteristics of the vocative texts.According to the specific characteristics of each part,special attention should be paid to the transformation between semantic translation method and communicative translation,and as for the methods of specification translation,translation strategies of literal translation and free translation are applied and translation skills like omission,division and combination are used,too.Overall,based on the different parts of patents,the adoption of appropriate translation strategies,translation methods and skills are very effective in patent translation.
