A Report On The Translation Of Editorials In The Washington Post

This is an English-Chinese translation practice.The translator chooses twenty editorials as the source text of this translation task.The materials come from The Washington Post in 2017.The excerpt has totally 10,546 words and the contents include economy,politics and public affairs.The translation report is divided into 4 chapters.Chapter 1 is introduction,including background of the task and text analysis.This chapter contains the history of The Washington Post,research situations of editorials both at home and abroad,features of editorials in The Washington Post and theory used in this translation practice.Chapter 2 is task description,including preparations before translation,translation process and quality assurance.In this chapter the translator introduces how to deal with the source text by ABBY FineReader 11 and SDL Trados Studio 2014,how to translate the source text and how to maintain the translation quality from three aspects.Chapter 3 is case analysis,which is the most important part of the report.This chapter mainly introduces different translation skills and the author’s analysis about different translation problems.Strategies the translator applied in this chapter including shift of perspectives,addition and omission.Among these three strategies,shift of perspectives is the most important one and the translator gives examples from seven aspects.Chapter 4 is conclusion.In this chapter,the translator summarizes major findings,limitations and reflections.The translator has a better understanding of editorials during the translation process.Although the translator makes the effort to comprehend the source text and modify the translation,there is still room for improvement.After this translation practice,the translator will keep accumulating professional knowledge and editorial translation experience to guarantee the target text more readable and acceptable in the future.
