| In July 2017,the author made use of summer vacation to take internships in the archives of Heilongjiang Province during the graduate student period, and contacted with many files of Japanese Puppet period. As a result, the author had a strong interest in the archives.Afterwards, the supervisor recommended An Investigation Report on the South Manchuria Railways Corporation as the translation practice text of graduate thesis. The book was compiled and published by Heilongjiang Archives. The contents of the book mainly include the minerals, economy, and culture of Heilongjiang region. These materials are all the "achievements" of the investigations of the South Manchuria Railway Corporation, which Japan used to attempt to plunder the resources in the northeast, control the northeast, and further invade the northeast. An Investigation Report on the South Manchuria Railways Corporation is the most direct evidence that the Japanese military invaded the northeastern region. The author’s selection of this topic aims to expose the Japanese invaders’ crimes of invading China, enrich the research on the South Manchuria Railways Corporation and relevant information on the research of Japanese Puppet files, and improve the translation skills. This translation practice report is a summary of the problems found by the author after carrying out a large number of translation practices on the above-mentioned archives. The archives texts are highly historical features,in which mention massive words and phrases such as weights and measures, homonyms, variants, and traditional characters. All files are written in katakana without light and voiced sounds. There are lots of Hou literary forms in syntax, and its language is also official document style. This practice report mainly focuses on words, sentences, and translation standards. In terms of words, the author mainly studies words of weights and measures, homonyms and others. In terms of sentence translation, sentence segmentation, word order adjustment, component conversion, translation, and subtraction are mainly studied. In terms of translation standards, the author mainly studies whether Yan fu’s theory of “faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance” applies to archives.According to the characteristics of the archives, the author translates this file through the translation methods of amplification, omission and combination, based on Yan fu’s translation standards and functional equivalent theory.By translating An Investigation Report on the South Manchuria Railways Corporation, the author has gained a deeper understanding of the importance of file translation,so translation must be carried out based on the idea of restoring history and being faithful to the original text.At present, the translation of Japanese files in the country is not yet sound enough, especially related translations of “Manchutie”.The author deeply feels that this task has a long way to go,so the author hopes to provide some lessons for future translation and development of this file through the author’s own translation summary. |
