Grammar is an important and necessary part in English learning.But after the new curriculum reform,many teachers misunderstand that the new way to teach grammar is to weaken the grammar teaching.But the fact is that grammar teaching turns to be more skill-based instead of knowledge-based.According to the reform of high school entrance exam,many examination do not check students' grammar knowledge directly,but put particular emphasis on students' use of language.Thus,teachers either reduce the teaching time on grammar,or keep doing exam exercises.This paper studies grammar teaching beliefs of English teachers in a junior middle school and explores the grammar teaching modes of teachers based on the New Curriculum Standard.Through questionnaire,case analysis,classroom observation and interviews,the teachers' grammar teaching beliefs and grammar teaching modes of a junior middle school in Kunming are finally revealed.The thesis is divided into five parts.The first part introduces the research background,the purpose and significance of the research,and makes a brief exposition of the research methods.The second part explains the theoretical basis of the thesis,analyzes and defines the literature from the aspects of grammar teaching modes and teacher's beliefs.The third part introduces the research method of the paper and puts forward the research question:(1)What teaching beliefs do teachers have in the middle school?(2)What teaching modes of grammar do teachers have? The fourth part analyzes the research through questionnaire survey,case analysis and interview.The fifth part is a summary of the whole research,and points out the existing problems.Through the investigation,the author summarizes the current teacher' grammar teaching beliefs,teaching modes,then conclude with the following results:(1)Under the guidance of the New Curriculum Standard,most teachers have new teaching beliefs about grammar.(2)There are three types of grammar teaching modes in this junior school:rules-based mode,eclectic grammar teaching mode and context-based mode.According to the research findings,the author puts forward the future suggestions as follows:Teachers should keep lifelong learning,follow the trend and accept new teaching concept.The research also indicates that the school leaders and education departments should strengthen the cultivation of teachers' beliefs and the guidance of teachers' teaching modes,so as to create a favorable environment for the professional development of teachers.
