This is a translation practice report guided by functional equivalence theory.The translation task is the fourth chapter of Origins of Genius.The objects in case analysis are some problems encountered during the translation and some suitable solutions are also adopted.The report gives an introduction about the main contents,the author and the literary form of the source text in Chapter 1.In literature review,the report describes the development and usage of functional equivalence theory.It expounds the preparations before translation,the translation process and proofreading in the third part.Case analysis is the main chapter in this report.The translator makes functional equivalence theory as the instruction,analyzes the equivalence in lexical,syntactical,discourse and stylistic four levels,combining with conversion,amplification,sentence division and recombination translation strategies to illustrate the application of functional equivalence theory in translation practice.There is a conclusion according to the description and analysis about the translation practice:(1)The functional equivalence theory can be applied to solve the problems in informative texts translation.The translator has a deeper understanding about functional equivalence theory after this English-Chinese translation practice.(2)Due to the differences between English and Chinese,the translator should try to understand the contents of source text correctly and ensure the translation quality.In addition,the translation should grasp more knowledge to achieve self-improvement.
