Helen Garner,an Australian literary star,is a prominent figure in writing of women's fiction. In adapting personal experiences in her works, she declares not only her peculiar feminist views changing with the development of feminism, but also consolidates her identity as a feminist writer and draws enormous attention from readers and critics globally.Going through the second and third wave feminism,Garner creates her works with distinct features of each feminist wave.Shedding more light on distinctive feminisms in different historical periods, her works give readers deep insight into her constant changing feminist views. Most of existing researches about Helen Garner mainly focus on the analysis of her works from the perspective of feminism. As one of the representatives of feminist writer,Garner in the second wave held the view that women were entitled to interact with men as equals and claim for sexual pleasure as they desired it.However, when it came to the third wave, the diverse female characters who were striving to break free from victimhood were exposed in pages and indicated the claims of the wave: tolerance and inclusiveness.Accompanying the development of feminism,Garner has always been adapting her views on how women should survive in patriarchal society.Present thesis is dedicated to generalizing and studying the author's feminist views embodied in her three works Monkey Grip,The Children's Bach and The Spare Room.Three main body parts of it respectively analyzes the growth of heroines from the perspective of voice, gender relations and self. From radical voice in the early work to diverse voices in postmodernism,Garner tells her readers that women possess the equal rights of speech as men.In redefining gender roles of males and females in different works,we can draw a conclusion that traditional gender relations have marched towards a new stage which is more harmonious. With the raising consciousness, each heroine is on the journey to a better self.
