A Study Of Chinese-English Interpreting Strategies Of Four-character Idioms From The Perspective Of The Interpretive Theory

With rapid development of economy and increasing promotion of comprehensive national strength,China is playing a significant role in international affairs.More and more Chinese leaders appear in international conferences and forums and take the advantage of the worldwide platforms to issue influential speeches.It is widely acknowledged that Chinese four-character idioms,as the essence of Chinese culture,with their concise structures and profound implications,are particularly favored by Chinese leaders.As English is the most widely used language in the world,the speeches are mainly interpreted into English.However,due to the special linguistic characteristics of the Chinese four-character idioms,the dramatic linguistic and cultural differences between Chinese and English,and the instantaneity of interpreting,it is difficult to accurately re-express the senses of the Chinese four-character idioms in English in a relatively limited time.In this thesis,a certain amount of Chinese four-character idioms were selected from the speeches addressed by Chinese leaders in international conferences and forums from 2016 to 2017 as examples and a specific analysis of their structures was also made thoroughly.The selected Chinese four-character idioms can be classified into coordinative,modified and subject-predicate types.Since each type has its distinct structures,four corresponding interpreting strategies,which are literal interpreting strategy,simplification strategy,restructuring strategy and explanatory interpreting strategy,were concluded in re-expressing the senses of the Chinese four-character idioms based on the Triangular Model of the Interpretive Theory.
