The translation material“Underlying Process of L1 and L3 Word Translation:Exploring the Semantic Relatedness Effect" is selected from the book The Development of Translation Competence:Theories and Methodologies from Psycholinguistics and Cognitive Science,edited by John W.Schwieter and Aline Ferreira.According to the Text Typology,the source text belongs to the category of informative text which is content-focused.It requires high accuracy in translation,so the translator has to do the work under the guidance of the "faithfulness" standard to guarantee that the content and information conveyed in the translation is the same as that in the source text.However,faithfulness in form is hard to achieve due to the different syntactic structures between the source language and the target language,which may result in obscurity in translation to make the target readers confused.Therefore,the translator also manages to achieve the standard of smoothness by using idiomatic language in the translation while making the target text faithful to the original content of the source text.In the translation process,the translator has found difficulties in the translation of the attitudinal discourse markers,as well as that at lexical and syntactical levels.And solutions have been found respectively.Generally speaking,hedges have been translated differently according to their specific functions.The translator has paid much attention to the conversion of English nouns into verbs,change of voice and adjustment of information focus during the translation to meet the standards of both the faithfulness and smoothness.The report is written for enriching the translator’s experience in translating academic papers and improving her translation competence.At the same time,the translator hopes that it will provide a reference for academic translation and the studies on it in the future.
