In the history of modern western hermeneutics, the quarrel between Gadamer and Strauss hasn't been noticed enough. But those hermeneutic problems and those discussions on relativism and nihilism within this quarrel, all deserve our attention,a lot! And when defining this quarrel,Strauss gave it “the quarrel of ancients and moderns”,while Gadamer gave this “the quarrel of historicism”.They just wouldn't reach an agreement and debated a lot. What I want to point out is,from their practical theoretical works,Gadamer belongs to philosophical hermeneutics, and Strauss to traditional hermeneutics. When we look at the quarrel,we shouldn't forget the different characters of their hermeneutic. In my opinion, including them both and those following researchers, they just didn't clearly realized this and sank in trivial arguments. So this paper is going to find a holistic angle to handle this whole quarrel. And the difference between traditional and philosophical hermeneutics will let us realize more clearly that they are both valuable to hermeneutics and philosophy. So we must stick to a dialectic position to regard this quarrel between Gadamer and Strauss, and the relation of traditional and philosophical hermeneutics.
