Focusing the researches on the publication The Children’s Educator issued during the Wuxu Reform Movement,the paper aimed to sort out the column contents of the publication,explored its experiment and efforts in knowledge education and moral cultivation,reveal its philosophies on child enlightening and thus dug deep into the correlations among children,citizens and the state.The first child-enlightening-education-oriented publication independently founded by the Chinese in modern China,The Children’s Educator aimed at popularizing education among all Chinese children,regardless of their gender.Devoted itself to fueling the reform and development of child enlightening education,it had made utmost efforts to explore knowledge education and moral cultivation among children.By adopting the discipline classification methods popular in both eastern and western worlds of the modern times,it divided various knowledge intended for the children into geological science,history,natural science,literature and so on,which were popularized through publications or instructions.Included in the The Children’s Educator was not only knowledge new to traditional enlightening-oriented reading materials,but also ideas and concepts new to traditional enlightening education.This was evidence that the reformers had made great effort to innovate the knowledge structure of child enlightening education system.The moral cultivation of The Children’s Educator covered ethical and physical education.In other words,it put stress on popularizing ideas consistent with Confucianism ethical principles among children,in an effort to cultivate both mental and physical health of children.This showcased the expectations of reformers to cultivate both mentally and physically health children for China.The issuance of The Children’s Educator was clear evidence that the reformers,mainly represented by the enlightening education association,attempted to combine knowledge education with moral cultivation and thoroughly reform and standardize the knowledge structure,ethical principles and physical quality for child enlightening education.Therefore,the resulting enlightening education practices were characterized by a mixture of old and new and the combination of both eastern and western cultures.There were high correlations among children,citizens and the state.Not only did this showcase the efforts of reformers to reform child enlightening education,but also revealed where child enlightening education should go in modern China.The experiment and efforts made by The Children’s Educator played a linking role in the development of child enlightening publications and child enlightening education of modern time,exerting a far-reaching effect on the compilation and publishing of later textbooks,child enlightening publications and reading materials.
