Study On The Temperamental Education Of Cheng Zhaoxiong

Cheng Zhaoxiong is a modern Neo-Confucian scholar who has the pastoral temperament.His temperamental education derives from his true nature of freedom,ease,openness,and straightness,and it is deeply influenced by the traditional Confucianism and Taoism,garden agronomy and other concepts,as well as the academic activities and exchanges with other Neo-Confucian scholars.Based on the theory of goodness of nature,Mr.Cheng inherited and developed the traditional temperament thought.He constructed the teaching system of temperament through combining the Taoist’s study of life,the Zen wisdom of life,that is,taking the Confucian thought of "Ren(benevolence)" as the core of the teaching of temperament,and explaining the rich connotation of the teaching of temperament with the combination of the idea of etiquette and music,as well as filial piety.He emphasized that writing is for expressing ideas with his own style,and emphasized on the simplicity of literature,expressing his disposition and thoughts with poetry,advocating gentleness and sincerity.In addition,he discussed the relationship between agriculture and temperamental education,including exploring human’s humanity and spirit with nature such as soil and water.Taking architecture,flowers and trees of the garden as the means of art education,it is considered that the principles of garden construction are related to poetry,calligraphy and painting,which is in line with temperamental education.Looking forward to combining the goodness of moral and the beauty of artistic as a whole,he wanted people to cultivate inner morality first while learning arts subsequently.Mr.Cheng attempted to carry out the way of temperament by teaching and arts.He hoped to awaken the aesthetic consciousness of contemporary people,as well as edify,cultivate and enrich people’s spiritual world and spiritual realm.Temperamental education is of great significance in curing all kinds of "modern diseases" brought by modern highly developed science and technology civilization and industrial society,such as the competition,alienation.What’s more,it can make up for people’s spiritual difficulties and uneasiness,letting them live a simple and poetical life with freedom and leisure as well as find a place to settle their souls and lives.
