Om Prakash Valmiki is one of the most famous Indian Hindi Dalit writers.His autobiographical novel Joothan recorded his discriminated and struggled lifetime as a Dalit through ordinary and sincere language.Valmiki also established his own position in the Hindi literature and even the Indian literary world by virtue of this work,therefore he was considered to be a monumental figure in the Dalit literary world.And the work itself has got a huge success since it was officially published in1997.Not only because it truly reflected the true Living condition of Dalit group in the several decades after India’s independence,providing a valuable material for the study of the caste system and the Dalit issues in Indian modern society;but also because of Valmiki’s creative intention and language with a strong sense of struggle,revealing the real living circumstances of Dalit in Indian society to all over the world,and also under such circumstances,Dalit’s efforts of pursuing freedom and liberation.This article,adopting a combination of intensive reading method and comprehensive analysis method,firstly makes a briefly introduction of the rise and development of Dalit literature and the life experiences and creative process of Dalit writer Om Prakash Valmiki.Then the article deeply discusses the four different levels of the consciousness of struggle contained in Joothan.Further more,the article explores the deep characteristics of Joothan’s consciousness of struggle------the severe criticism on Indian society and the magnificent blueprint for the liberation of Dalit.
