A Study On The Metaphor Translation Of “The Power Of China”(2017 CPLA Conscription Promo Video)from The Perspective Of Multimodal Metaphor

In 1980s,Lakoff and Johnson,generalizing metaphor as a humans’way of thought and action,put forward CMT（Conceptual Metaphor Theory）,which caused a great stir in linguistic field.From 21^st century,the rapid and vigorous development of information technology has broadened our communication patterns extensively,resulting in the dynamic interaction between a variety of social medium signs as sound,picture,music,etc.,thus to multiply our communication modes in great degree,which hastens the birth of Multimodal Metaphor Theory（MMT）.Video advertisement as the fresh blood of advertising almost consisting of all communication modes is very strong in heightening the atmosphere.Political video advertisement is a king of diplomatic means and functions well in foreign affairs.As for metaphor,a powerful tool to express and enhance emotion,its English translation has naturally been a hot topic in academic studies.Conscription videos of China show the world China’s military force,in which the success of metaphor translation will greatly influence the degree of accepting and understanding of the audience.With Forceville and Urios-Aparisi’s MMT as theoretical basis,the newly released conscription video“The Power of China”as research object,this thesis classified images in the video,and combined their respective metaphor translation in order to provide meager reference value for the English translation of conscription videos in our country.To achieve the above aim,this paper uses the authoritative metaphor identification step MIPVU,and ELAN image tagging software,under qualitative and quantitative methods to synthetically identify and analyze objectively the multimodal metaphors in“The Power of China”.Finally,based on the characteristics of the metaphor in conscription video and the contrastive analysis of metaphors between Chinese and English within two dimensions,word and cognition,the author analyzes the concrete translation cases further under the guidance of previous studies on metaphor translation.It is hoped that the cognitive analysis of translation methods and typical image translation summarized in this paper can be of reference value to translators involved in the translation project in military field.
