Interpreter’s Intercultural Communication Awareness In Escort Interpreting

Escort interpreting requires the interpreter to secure bidirectional communication between the speaker and the listener.The cultural differences and the lack of intercultural communication awareness increase the interpreter’s effort load and may worsen the interpreter’s performance.So far,compared with studies on the interpreter’s multiple roles that he/she plays in the escort interpreting,the research on how the interpreter’ intercultural communication awareness helps to improve the quality of interpreting service are still limited.In this practice report,the author analyzes the reasons for her interpreting failures in escort interpreting – lack of intercultural awareness and skills.She then employs the Cross-cultural Communication consciousness theory and the Intercultural Communication Skills theory to help her find out solutions.The author concludes that with good intercultural communication awareness and intercultural communication skills,the interpreting performance can be improved.Based on the latter escort interpreting experiences,the author proves the effectiveness of her solutions by analyzing clients’ feedback and the author’s self-feedback at the end of the report.
