Umberto Eco?1932-2016?is an encyclopedic Italian scholar of the 20thcentury,famous contemporary semiotics, literary theorist and novelist.Eco's hermeneutics is full of characteristics. He not only advocates active interpretation of literary texts, but also opposes overinterpretation in theory, embodying the dialectical ideas of openness, limited, and seriality. In view of the close relationship between Umberto Eco's interpretative thought and his famous novel,The Name of the Rose, this paper focuses on discussing“the tension of Theory”.The purpose is to combine his interpretative thought with the literary analysis of The Name of the Rose,in order to draw lessons from the foreign academic thought and to provide a unique vision for the rationalization of literary interpretation. The first chapter,“Western Hermeneutics and Eco's hermeneutics theory”,focuses on Eco's hermeneutic theory and puts it in the field of Western literary hermeneutics, highlighting his ideological characteristics and theoretical contributions. The second chapter,“the openness of The Name of the Rose”,mainly discusses the openness of literary interpretation from the dimension of the combination of literary theory and literary criticism practice, which involves the discussion of the title of the novel and the analysis of the narrative structure. The third chapter,“the limited of The Name of the Rose”,discusses another important aspect of Eco's hermeneutics theory, focusing on the limited of the novel world and the structural framework of the detective novel. The fourth chapter,“the seriality of Eco's dialectical comprehensive literary interpretation thought”,on the basis of analyzing the openness and limited of Eco's hermeneutics theory, discusses their dialectical relationship with their serial thought, and involves three labyrinth models of Eco.Seriality makes the openness and limited of literary interpretation a dialectical comprehensive dynamic process of“positive-anti-conjunct”,which means that literary interpretation can be indefinitely extended and continuously changed,so it has more rational significance. The conclusion holds that Eco's hermeneutic thoughts are characterized by the dialectical combination of openness, limited and seriality, and their extension and change constitute a kind of theoretical tension.
