John Galsworthy(1867—1933)was an English novelist and playwright.He once studied at Oxford major in law,when he acquired solicitor license he started to engaging attorney business.However,before long,he gave up lawyers work and turned to occupied in literary cause.At first,his work had little influence in literature circle until in 1906,he accomplished his full-length novel,The Man of Property,which won favourable comments and universally acknowledged that raised him to the first rank among English writers as well as the excellent successor of realistic tradition in English literature.In1932,Galsworthy depended on his novel,The Forsyte Saga won the Nobel Prize for literature.The Forsyte Saga was a long masterpiece,which was a trilogy including The Man of Property,In Chancery and To Let.The Forsyte Saga mainly described the family issues of the Forsytes and the entanglement of love and hate,which guide readers to feel the wide social and historical significance through these complications.The Forsyte Saga was generally recognized as a documentation of the British upper-middle class of the early 20 th century.Galsworthy expresses his deep concern of social problems in the transforming British society.This thesis analyzes the text from the perspective of ecological holistic theory,which provides a new theoretical foundation for The Forsyte Saga in the literary realm of research.This thesis discusses the theme of the article from three aspects,for instance,concerning the individual,respecting the overall interests and the harmony and the unity of ecosystem between overall interests and human long-term interests.The first part discusses the aspect of concerning the individual development,which respectively explains from material level and spiritual level.The second part starts from discussing ecological integrity which concretely analyzes natural ecology,social ecology and ethical ecology one by one.The third part explains the harmony and the unity of ecosystem between overall interests and human long-term interests.Specifically,this part expounds from two aspects,that are establishing and emerging of ecological ego and the unification of ecological nature and human liberation.This thesis takes ecological holism as the breakthrough point and combines the politics,history,culture and ethic of late Victorian British society thatinvestigates the main feature of contemporary British society and the Forsyte family,which not only enriches the comprehension of text,but also provides a new thought for textual research that has some referential significance for after scholars.
