Kawakami Hiromi is one of the representative female writers in today's text world and a unique writer who travels through women's fantasy world. Her works have been collected in many Japanese national textbooks and also has won numerous awards including the Akutagawa Ryunosuke Prize, the Mulasakisikibu Literature Prize, the Itosei Literature Prize, and the Tanizaki Junichiro Award. In recent years,Kawakami Hiromi has received much attention from the literary world because of her frequent awards for works. However, the award-winning work of the 115 th Akutagawa Ryunosuke Prize in Literature in 1996 was highly praised by scholars in the academic world. As a result, the value of Kawakami Hiromi literature has become the focus of academic discussion. This thesis takes the novelette Step on Snake published in 1999 as the research object, adopts the theory of narratology and text theory comprehensively, systematically discusses the narrative style of the work, the image of the snake, and analyzes the symbolic significance of the snake. The reason why the image of the snake was formed clarified the charm of Kawakami Hiromi's Step on Snake. This thesis consists of the following five parts.First, the purpose of the study, the significance of the study, the prior research, and the research methods were explained. The first chapter analyzes the creative background of Step on Snake from the life of Kawakami Hiromi, the background of his works, the initial appearance and establishment of his works, and thus clarifies the relationship between the creation background of the works and Step on Snake. The second chapter examines the uniquely charming narrative style of Step on Snake from three aspects: the setting of realistic and non-realistic backgrounds, the "narrative" of female narrators, and the unique structure. The works are uniquely designed from the background, theme, the characters, the narrator, and the narrative structure. The third chapter analyzes the roles played by the three snakes in the works. It is clear that the snake's image symbolizes the inner loneliness and personality division of modern people. Moreover, the reason why the image of the snake is formed in the work is not only related to Kawakami's personal experience, but also closely related to the influence of Japanese snake culture on it.Finally, this dissertation reveals the unique charm and literary value of the works by analyzing the narrative structure and image of Snake in Kawakami's Step on Snake.
