| This is a translation practice on Writing to Learn written by William Zinsser,a famous American writer,editor and teacher.Writing to Learn,one of his masterpieces,is both an anthology and a narrative about his experience with the concept of "Writing Across the Curriculum."The author translates part of the first chapter of the book.Writing Across the Curriculum teaching reform movement began in the United States in the last century,exerting a profound influence on the curriculum setting and teaching methods in many universities.First of all,text features are analyzed.The thesis focuses on the coherence in sentence group translation from three perspectives--cohesion,logic and structure.English sentence groups,coherent in content and cohesive in structure,are often more than sentences and no greater than paragraphs from discourse unit.The thesis discusses the corresponding strategies to deal with its coherence from semantic,logical and structural perspectives.The translation practice shows that with full understanding of the coherence structure in the source text,the application of transformation--for instance,translation methods like omission and supplement--enables the translation coherent in Chinese.The translation of sentence groups should not be confined to the original format,instead,should take the target language into consideration and appropriately apply transformation from the perspective of coherence. |
