| In the process of cultural communication in the modern world,the Christian missionary is a group worth studying.In modern China,there were a large number of Western missionaries.They were deeply and widely involved in Chinese society,and played a significant role in promoting cultural exchanges between China and the West and promoting the development of relevant Chinese disciplines.Many missionaries have spent decades in China and gradually become sinologists who are good at studying Chinese traditional culture.They have achieved important academic achievements in a certain field or made considerable contributions to cultural exchanges between China and the West.Taking such people as research objects,we will review and sort out the history of discipline development from a macro perspective.Based on the previous studies,this dissertation chooses the Brntish Baptist missionary F.S.Drake as the research object.F.S.Drake has its own particularity.He was born in China and grew up in Shandong.He spent about three-quarters of his life in China.F.S.Drake had a profound influence on the development of archaeology in Shandong and Hong Kong;his published works preserved precious early information for us.At the same time,F.S.Drake is also a controversial figure,there are many historical facts should be investigated deeply.The dissertation includes several parts listed below:The introduction part introduces the reason and significance of choosing F.S.Drake as the research object,expounds the background of F.S.Drake and the history of archaeology,and summarizes the brief history of previous studies on F.S.Drake and his work,then states the source and research methods of this dissertation.Chapter I is about family background and life experience of F.S.Drake.Analyzing the background to explains the reasons for his academic orientation,and introducing his career history in Cheeloo University and Hong Kong University to show his contribution to these universities.Chapter II introduces and reviews the ar-chaeological activities of F.S.Drake in Shandong.This chapter is the main part of this paper.The focus on his study of archaeological sites of Shang and Zhou Dynasties and sculptured stone of Han Dynasty shows the academic vision of F.S.Drake.Besides,this part mentions the intersection of F.S.Drake with James Mellon Menzies,Wu Jinding,Wang Xiantang and other scholars.Chapter III introduces and reviews the archaeological activities of F.S.Drake in Hong Kong,mainly his excavation of the Li Cheng Uk Han Tomb.After excavation,he objected to tear down the ancient tomb.This excavation is an important turning point in the history of Hong Kong archaeology.Chapter IV briefly introduces his study on Chinese religious remains,and focuses on his investigation and research of Buddhist remains in Shandong and Nestorianism remains in China.The conclusion section generalizes the main points of this dissertation. |
