A Report On The Interpreting For The President’s Delegation From Bicol University

This thesis is a report on the author’s interpreting practice.From May 13^th to May 15^th of 2018,entrusted by School of Foreign Languages,Shenyang Normal University（SNU）,the author provided interpreting service for the President’s delegation from Bicol University,the Philippines（English-Chinese interpreting）.Covering a string of topics from the profile of Bicol University to the cooperative and exchange programs between the two sides,the conferences required that the interpreter should be capable of consecutive interpreting and have a good mastery of related vocabulary and expressions about education.Inevitably,the author encountered a few problems and difficulties in the interpreting.Among them,high-density information,long sentences and nominal structures are notably obvious,thus worth of further research and analysis.In solving the problems,the author takes advantage of Interpretive Theory of Translation（ITT）and reformulation strategy,introducing the concepts of sense unit and re-expression as well as their significance in interpreting so as to restructure the original discourse.According to ITT,sense units are a string of notions occurring in the interpreter’s mind unevenly and the understanding of them is in need of both linguistic and non-linguistic knowledge.Re-expression,however,is a process where the interpreter expresses the perception received in the target language.Thus,the interpreting quality largely depends on the interpreter’s mastery of target language,as well as his world knowledge.Beyond that,the problems and difficulties in the process are classified into 3 categories with corresponding tactics.The separation of sense units and recognition and memorization of notional nouns are to solve the problem of high-density information.Division and the use of connectives will make it much easier to render long sentences and noun structures in English can be converted in figures of speech with amplification.With these tactics applied,the interpreting will be more of clarity,accuracy and fluency.In the last part,the author concludes that ITT and reformulation is a great guide for conference interpreting and reflects on the major findings and limitations of the thesis.
