A Portirait of the Artist as a Young Man represents Stephen Dedalus's spiritual course where having been exposed to intimidation,temptation and violence,he regards art as a lifelong ambition.Stephen'sdesire on art,overflowing among the words and between the lines,not only galvanizes him into considering art his belief,but also embodies Irish People's introspection and creativity on their own culture.The thesis is intended to construct a concept,"Stephen—Art",on the foundation of Schizoanalysis Theory which is proposed by Deleuze and Guattari,and then analyze the relationship between"Stephen"and"art"from three dimensions,desire,event and flight.The thesis argues that it is the desire that pushes"Stephen"to "art",and in turn,"Stephen"reshapes the Irish "art" with the help of desire.The first chapter introduces the theoretical foundation of "Stephen—Art",teases out schizo forms of Stephen and art,and states the ways to assemble and connect them as well.Deleuze argues that concept is the progress with dynamic becoming.Its peculiarity is volatile.The way to create a concept is to smash an object into schizo forms,and to connect two objects which seem to have no links as a unit of molecule,or in schizo form.This kind of connection can produce a fantastic reaction.Such reaction is the moment where a new thought is born."Stephen—Art"has five schizo forms:"Baby Tuckoo—Irish Mythology","Teenager With Sexual Drive—Romantic Novel","Stephen Hero-Romantic Poetry","the Artist as a Young Man-Classical Literature" and "Stephen Dedalus—Roman Mythology".The connection between Stephen and art will generate the desire with creative power.In addition,the desire is able to break through the stubborn modes set by psychoanalysis,to break through the constraint on Stephen which is caused by the social relations coming from the collectivity and the other.As a result,the flow of desire emerges.The second chapter explores the impact of "art" on "Stephen".By analyzing the links among five schizo forms of "Stephen-Art",as well as the development logic of"Stephen-Art"per se,this chapter traces the track of the flow of desire.In Deleuze's view,concept is event.As an event,"Stephen—Art"begins with non-body,processes with eternity,and end up with accident.Simultaneously,the flow of desire undergoes a circle:from mythology to romanticism,from romanticism to classical literature,from classical literature to mythology.Finally,the stream of consciousness runs into the flow of desire,which generates"epiphany".After epiphany,Stephen comprehends the true essence of art,afterwards,runs away from home with a determined mind."Art"molds"Stephen".The third chapter discusses the reaction of "Stephen" on "art".The running-away of Stephen symbolizes "flight".The novel builds up a line of flight between"Stephen Dedalus—Roman Mythology" and "Baby Tuckoo-Irish Mythology".Pointing at the narrow-minded Irish nationalism,the line of flight conducts de-territorialization,which makes the radical Irish nationalism of Irish Renaissance atomized into Humanism of Italian Renaissance.Carrying forward the spirit of Humanism,only inthis way can the rebirth of Irish art be realized.The spirit of Humanism is an advanced form of desire."Stephen",exploits the Humanism-like desire to forge the conscience of Ireland,to create the"art"of Ireland.
