Nowadays,in China,English teachers in junior middle school are required to ensure teaching quality and keep teaching progress.Under the circumstances,teachers lack the opportunity to try new teaching methods.From September 2017 to February 2018,the author conducted the teaching practice in Xingxian Middle School in Lvliang,where the author held the position of the English teacher of Class 1702,Grade 7 during the internship.In the first month of teaching,the author adopted the traditional teaching method for English reading class,which required students to memorize key words and sentences and answer relevant questions.However,the author found that students lacked interests in English reading,could not concentrate on lessons,and could not actively participate in teaching activities.Therefore,it is a new topic worth exploring that how to stimulate and maintain students' motivation in English reading teaching.ARCS Model proposed by John Keller of the Florida State University is a systematic method that can effectively stimulate and maintain students' learning motivation via the instructional design of four aspects,attention,relevance,confidence and satisfaction.Therefore,in order to stimulate students' learning motivation and improve students' interests in learning,based on ARCS Model,the author did the action research and applied this model to English reading teaching in Xingxian Middle School.Before and after the implementation of action research,by means of questionnaires and interviews,the researcher analyzed whether this teaching model solved the problems in traditional reading teaching and stimulated students' learning motivation.The findings indicated that the teaching approach based on ARCS Model can stimulate students' learning motivation,improve students' interests in learning and enable students to acquire knowledge in a relaxed environment.Meanwhile,in the various teaching activities,students' subjectivityis brought into play.
