Literary works,as some of the most important carriers of language learning and culture study,are the reflections of quintessence of human’s ideology and culture.English literary works,especially British and American literary works,are such useful resources for learners who learn English as a foreign language to master original language fast and experience western culture and ideology that they should be applied to English learning.Selected Readings of British & American Literature,a subject of English major,has been widely taught and accepted in college,while reading British and American literary works is on the stage of attempt in senior high schools.With the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017)decreed and carried out by the Ministry of National Education,core competences of English were put forward,and senior high school students should read at least 300,000 words in their extracurricular reading.However,traditional reading in senior high schools,based on the question types of College Entrance Examination,cannot meet the needs of reading.Based on the instructions of academic proficiency in this curriculum standards,writing tasks in College Entrance Examination require students to be able to grasp the main idea of a passage or continue writhing a passage,which shows the requirement of reading ability is getting higher and higher.After studying Humanistic Education Theory,Input Hypothesis and Schema Theory,the research was put forward to study the application of British and American literary works reading to English reading teaching in senior high schools.Based on the foundation of other studies using British and American masterworks reading in key senior high schools,the research applied British and American literary works reading to an ordinary senior high school so as to explore the ways of application to promote it widely.The research mainly deals with the problems of the current situation and implementation of the students’ reading of British and American literary works,how teachers carry out British and American literary works reading in reading teaching,and the influence of applying British and American literary works reading to reading teaching.The research mainly uses Documentary Analysis,Survey Research Method and Classroom Observation Method to study 269 students and 6 English teachers in Grade One of Qingdao No.16 Senior High School,which is an ordinary school,to bring in British and American literary works in English reading lesson.The duration of the research is one semester.Based on some domestic and overseas experience,the research chooses British and American literary works that are suitable to students’ language level after testing students’ language level.British and American literary works reading is scheduled one lesson per week.The research uses the scores of reading part in English tests at the beginning of the semester and at the end of the semester as the data of pre-test and post-test to compare to conclude the influence of carrying out British and American literary works reading on English reading ability.The research records the performance of teachers and students by classroom observation scale to analyze students’ learning activities and teachers’ teaching activities.The research also conducts a survey with a questionnaire to learn the current situation of British and American literary works reading and how the students do it after carrying out the research.The research finds that most of the students are interested in British and American literary works reading.They have many ways to be exposed to British and American literary works and are willing to read and keep on reading British and American literary works in practice.Teachers can promote the efficiency of British and American literary works reading by choosing proper literary works,designing class activities and after-class activities carefully and making multiple assessment.To ensure students to benefit from British and American literary works reading,teachers can observe teachers’ and students’ performance on time,do a questionnaire at proper time and compare students’ reading scores,together with adapting appropriate teaching methods in time.Besides,British and American literary works reading has a positive influence on students reading interests,reading ability and core competences of English.Therefore,British and American literary works reading can be promoted in senior high schools,and should be kept on for a long time.
