Olden Regret in Lin’an is the first Chinese Zither concerto composed by composer He Zhanhao in the early 1990s.Based on the tragic fate of Yue Fei(a national hero living in the Southern Song Dynasty),it takes some melodies and tones from a Chinese ancient poem The River All Red as the theme material for development and variation, becoming a modern Chinese Zither music of historical theme. This article, through a comparison of three video versions of Olden Regret in Lin’an performed by Wang Zhongshan,Yuan Sha and Liu Le,from the macroscopic and microscopic perspectives, attemps to analyze the performance differences in emotion, structure, techniques in both hands, cadenza processing and pursuits of timbre, for further exploration of aesthetic differences and reasons why the three Chinese Zither performers can display different styles and versions in terms of the same melody.
