The translation report is based on an excerpt from Speech and Language Processing: An Introduction to Natural Language Processing,Computational Linguistics and Speech Recognition,which introduces the basic theory and methods in Natural Language Processing,including language modeling,the n-gram,one of the most widely used tools in language processing,perplexity,entropy and some data smoothing techniques.The book has positive significance for the development of the relevant field of research currently conducted in China.Before translation,a corpus-based analysis of the source text is performed from the perspectives of STTR,lexical density,mean sentence length,mean word length and keyword list;background knowledge in computer science and mathematics is acquired;complicated equations and tables from the source text are re-edited.During the translation process,computer-aided translation tools,including CAD software and electronic dictionaries are used to guarantee the accuracy and uniformity of terms.The translation analysis of names,terminologies,polysemous words,category words and negative words,as well as the analysis of attributive and adverbial sentences are provided in the case study.Various translation methods have been adopted to achieve more accurate and fluent translation,such as conversion,extension,annotation and omission.Through the translation work,the author obtains precious translation experience,improves the translation ability and realizes the importance of having a solid language foundation of both English and Chinese.In addition,the translators should learn to use translation software and tools to improve the efficiency and accuracy.
