On Translator’s Subjectivity In Literary Translation

Ernst-August Gutt’s theory of translation and relevance points outs that translation is an interlingual interpretive act which involves ostensive-inferential processes.It aims to have receptor language audience receive adequate contextual effects with as little processing effort spent as possible through the active interplay among stimulus,communicative clues of the texts and cognitive environment of the target audience.Translators who play an instrumental part in translation inevitably bring their subjectivity into play during the interpretation processes,offering target audience with better experience and enhanced contextual effects.The translator brings her subjectivity into full play when working on the translation of "Just Les is Fine",from choosing of the text to its understanding and interpretation.The translator recognizes carefully each and every stimulus and communicative clue so as to have a full understanding of the original text and transfers them properly in the target language after a deliberate consideration of the expectations and cognitive environment of the target readers.The translator pays close attention to its distinct feature in narrative points of view,employs such translation methods as addition,deletion,and domestication to narrow the cognitive gap between different cultures and deal with culture-loaded expressions,and endeavors to recreate the major characters vividly by employing a large variety of figures of speech and a touch of creativity as well as proper translation methods.Based on the translation of"Just Les is Fine"carried out under the theory of translation and relevance,this paper make efforts to elaborate on how translators’subjectivity gets manifested with a number of cases taken from the translation project.It arrives at the conclusion that the theory of translation and relevance is of theoretical significance to studies on translators’ subj ectivity;in literary translation,translators can polish their translated works and enhance contextual effects with appropriate application of their subjectivity.
