The thesis intends to focus on the analysis of the Buddha schema of Zhang Daqian’s imitation works of Dunhuang.Through the comparative analysis of the works he created when he was in Dunhuang and the original frescos, the author tries to explore the imitation methods he adopts in the imitation of Dunhuang frescos, and summarize the formation and changes of the special schema language he used. The relationship between Dunhuang and Zhang Daqian is so close that they cannot be separated. When Zhang Daqian,in his 40 s,came to Dunhuang and saw the much plundered and damaged art there, their meeting brought forth for both of them shining lights in the future.Zhang Daqian has a very deep Dunhuang complex. The faith in his heart, the sufferings he suffered at that time and the bottle –neck he encountered in artistic creation drive him to the gobi desert, where he spent a lot of money,as well as mental and physical efforts. In this way,he succeeded in creating more than 200 pieces of painting works, which help Dunhuang re-emerge before the eyes of the world and initiate the “pilgrimage journey” of large number of following painters.Zhang Daqian created a great many imitation works when he stayed in Dunhuang, from which the author of the thesis chooses one piece of representative work from the works that he created in Mogao Caves and Yulin Caves respectively. Then the author makes a comparison between the works selected previously and the rough sketches in Zhang Daqian’s imitation works. The comparison starts from the style of painting, color filling, structure, etc.and contrastive analysis is made from these perspectives one by one. From the analysis, the author draws the conclusion that the “experimental” recovering and imitation method is the major reason for the formation of his special schema. The author starts from viewpoints some scholars hold to “imitation”,one of the six methods and tries to analyze Zhang Daqian’s understanding and inheritance of the method as well as his choice in his subjective and objective imitation. He selects from the quintessence of the Dunhuang frescos that were created in the past dynasties and develops a special schema language of his own.His schema changes are manifested on the medium materials, style paining, color filling, mould, composition and manifestation mode, from which the author explores and analyzes his schema and draws a conclusion of his special schema language. Finally, the author summarizes the era significance of Zhang Daqian’s journey to Dunhuang from the perspectives of sociology and art,as well as his influence on the creation of Buddha paintings by the following generations.
